Kedah “owns” Penang: Sanusi’s remarks a threat to national unity

The recent remarks by Kedah Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Sanusi Nor, that Kedah “owns” Penang, and that the Federal Constitution should be amended to support his claim, shows that Perikatan Nasional (PN) only relies on provocative and extremist remarks to gain traction.

Firstly, Sanusi should be reminded that the Federal Constitution is the foundation by which Malaysia has been built on, with each state having sovereign rule over itself. His appeal to change the status of Penang to be placed under Kedah, shows his ignorance towards this simple fact.

The Federal Constitution is supposed to be the supreme law which protects the rights of every citizen and state. Hence, it should not be changed on a whim of any individual or organisation, especially when it is done solely for their own benefit.

Malaysians who have read or heard such remarks should also be cautioned not to be easily influenced, because these provocative and extremist intents are the greatest threats to national unity. If allowed to gain traction, they can cause rifts in society and divide people.

As Malaysians, we each have our own unique identities, but we must also be respectful towards others and their rights. Therefore, we must stand against all forms of extremism, no matter where and who it comes from, so that Malaysia and its next generation can continue to prosper in harmony.
