People-First or Power-First? Bersatu should not be asking for DPM post now

While Malaysia and the whole world is struggling in a post pandemic era amidst global inflation and price hikes, it is unthinkable for Bersatu chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to be asking for cabinet positions and the Deputy Prime Minister’s (DPM) post.

There is less than a year before the Parliament is automatically dissolved, and political parties will once again be campaigning for the general election. Hence, asking for ministerial positions now is extremely ill-timed. Furthermore, there are issues on the ground which deserve more attention.

Since the initial outbreak of the pandemic, everyone’s financial situation has more or less been affected. Now, with additional inflationary pressures, families are struggling to put food on the table. Asking for the DPM post now simply screams how tactless and out of touch Bersatu is with the people.

The government has already established a special task force against inflation to alleviate the situation. Thus, as part of the government, Bersatu should be working towards helping lift the people out of their financial plight.

It is time for less politicking, and more focusing on helping the people, because what they need most right now is not a DPM, but a way forward through this period of uncertainty.
