The disturbing images and videos of Dara, Amoi, and Kelat—collectively known as DAK—circulating on social media have raised fundamental questions about the welfare and mental health of the animals in our care. When we witness a lack of decisive action and a tendency to shift responsibility, it is clear that we need a systemic shift from excuses to concrete solutions.
This is not just about animal welfare; it is about our collective responsibility toward transparency, psychological safety, and humane treatment. This space is intended to inform the community, acting as a library of facts and value rather than rhetoric.
Our Immediate Demands for Reform
To ensure a path forward grounded in expert assessment and public trust, we urge the Government to implement the following measures immediately:
1. Establishment of a Dedicated Task Force
A specialized team must be formed within 7 days, comprising elephant experts, zoo management professionals, and wildlife specialists to lead the rescue and welfare strategy.
2. Independent Expert Audit
An independent panel of neutral, credible, and qualified experts must be granted on-site access to conduct a comprehensive assessment and audit of DAK’s physical and emotional health.
3. Transparency and Public Accountability
The findings of this audit must be made transparent and accessible to the public, as this matter is of significant public interest.
4. Freedom from Interference
The panel must carry out its duties professionally and independently, ensuring conclusions remain objective and credible.
5. A Structured Action Plan and "Plan B"
A clear timeline of 3 months to 1 year must be established to resolve these issues. If conditions do not improve, a humane and carefully planned repatriation process to Malaysia must be initiated.
A Call to Actualise Change
We are looking for more than just a temporary fix; we are looking for a commitment to doing the work of reform. The goal is to move from awareness to actualisation, ensuring the welfare of DAK is prioritized without professional or political interference.
Immediate steps must be taken by Tennoji Zoo to improve the living conditions of Dara, Amoi, and Kelat while these larger systemic solutions are put into motion.
We stand in solidarity with DAK.
