Press Statement by MCA Secretary-General Datuk Chong Sin Woon
EC must take action against PH & Ketapi’s repeated election transgressions

By repeatedly abusing government resources in numerous by-elections and breaking election rules, Pakatan Harapan (PH) blatantly thumbs its nose at the Election Commission (EC) and insults the intelligence of voters.
Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Mohamaddin Ketapi had announced that he would allocate RM50,000 to a school within the Kimanis constituency. This is not the first time PH has violated election laws by abusing taxpayers’ money to buy votes. Ketapi further bragged that he could “directly approve” people’s request as a perk of being in power. This is more than an admission of guilt, he is actually proud of his transgression.
According to Election Offences Act 1954, anyone who hands out money or goodies to voters during an election in order to corruptly influence to give or refrain from giving vote is considered to have committed a crime. Offenders can be fined RM5,000, or imprisoned up to two years, or both.
When will the EC finally decide to take action against PH repeated election transgressions? By continuing to say and do nothing, EC is already being perceived as a paper tiger.
I am confident that the voters are smart. They know that PH had to abuse public resources time and time again to buy votes because this government has nothing substantial to show; no accomplishments, no political depth. It is up to the voters once again to demonstrate that they want a clean and fair election by using their votes to reject PH.
