Lives at stake: S’gor Menteri Besar Amirudin and Lim Kit Siang must stop politicking

At this critical juncture, it is imperative that all parties work together in order to bring down the number of Covid-19 infections. Hence, it is frivolous for the Selangor Menteri Besar Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari and DAP supremo Lim Kit Siang to be questioning the difficult but necessary decision to implement the Conditional MCO.
Pakatan has urged the government to take on anti-pandemic measures, yet when the federal government announced the implementation of the CMCO for Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya, the duo suddenly seemed alarmed and taken aback at the notion. What reasons do they have, except to politicise and reduce public confidence of the government?
Amirudin claimed that CMCO should not be implemented for the whole of Selangor, while Lim kit Siang commented that CMCO comes with “too high a price” on the economy.
The Health Director-General Tan Sri Dr Noor Hisham has already said, the Klang Valley CMCO is to better manage and control infections stemming from crossing states. Even though the daily infections in Klang Valley are less than 100, the cases come from various areas besides Sabak Bernam. Thus, it would be foolish to wait and see yellow areas turn red.
Under CMCO, Klang Valley economy may continue operations while traffic is reduced. Not only does this help in breaking the chain of infection, it provides a middle ground in protecting the economy and managing the pandemic, because we cannot survive with just one.
Perhaps, Amirudin and Lim Kit Siang think they are the expert in pandemic control compared to Dr. Noor Hisham; perhaps they think that CMCO should be implemented AFTER the pandemic is out of control?
I reiterate, this is a crucial moment, lest there be more lives lost to the virus. I hope that the Selangor MB and Lim Kit Siang will cooperate with the federal government, instead of playing politics and questioning government policies just because of political alignment.
If Covid-19 manages to grip the entire Selangor, or the whole Malaysia, it would really be “too high a price to pay” as Lim has said.
