Through MCA’s mediation, Finance Ministry approves reinstatement of tax-exempt status for Lam Wah Ee Hospital & Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital!

Following the revocation of the tax-exempt status of Lam Wah Ee Hospital and Mount Miriam Hospital in June 2020, donors were no longer able to apply for tax reliefs when filing their income tax returns. This thus seriously affected the source of donations for both hospitals.

However, following the mediation by MCA for both these hospitals which included party President Datuk Seri Ir Dr Wee Ka Siong actively handling this matter, the matter has finally been resolved. The Ministry of Finance (MoF) has formally written to both Lam Wah Ee Hospital as well as Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital reinstating their tax-exempt status and both hospitals have likewise received the official notification.

This news is indeed most welcome for the Lam Wah Ee Hospital and the Mount Miriam Cancer Hospital, their patients and the public at large as it ensures the continuation of quality healthcare services at affordable prices.

In handling this issue, MCA is committed towards safeguarding the well-being and welfare of the rakyat in a pragmatic approach. While Dr Wee is MCA’s sole representative in the Cabinet, he is indeed dedicated to the rakyat.

I am grateful to these two hospitals for having responded in a calm manner following the revocation of their tax-exempt status. There are still some details to be processed and co-ordinated with MoF in view of the reinstatement of the tax-exempt status.

On behalf of MCA Penang, I would like to thank the Minister of Finance Dato’ Seri Tengku Zafrul and Dr Wee Ka Siong.

The hospitals had lost their tax-exempt status, a legacy caused by a revision of guidelines by the previous Pakatan government on 15 May 2019.  However, after Perikatan Nasional took over the government, it discovered that this problem was particularly relevant to the masses, and immediately, it was actively dealt with, with the intention to benefit patients and the hospitals.
