Gong Xi Fa Cai from Pakatan with 20 more years of tolls!

As Chinese New Year comes around the corner, it appears the Pakatan Harapan government did not fail to deliver: a 20-year extension on the PLUS highway concession, which is a stark deviation from the original promise of abolishing tolls.

Nobody can forget how in the past, DAP leaders viciously slammed the 4th Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir as benefitting his cronies through privatising highways, and also criticised the BN government for the heavy burdens placed upon the rakyat’s shoulders. During every General Election, they would repeat this chant to incite the people’s grievances toward the BN government, while positioning themselves as the saviour who will abolish tolls.

Fast forward to the present: With Tun Dr Mahathir as the 7th Prime Minister, PLUS highway will have its concessionaire period extended by 20 years. Yet not a single word has been uttered by DAP.

Furthermore, DAP economics wizard Tony Pua, now the Finance Minister’s political secretary, had famously claimed on 12 November 2009 that ALL highways can be bought over with just RM25 billion, with the subsequent abolishment of toll fares after purchase. Wouldn’t now be a good time for him to forward his proposal to the Prime Minister?

At the end of the day, the abolishment of toll fares remains to be seen but what has been ‘abolished’ is perhaps the integrity of these leaders.
