Press statement by MCA  Youth Civil Society Movement Coordination Bureau Chief Heng Zhi Li

Lim Kit Siang not qualified to request lifting of Parliament’s suspension

If DAP Member of Parliament for Iskandar Puteri Lim Kit Siang really intends to contribute to the rakyat during this Covid-19 pandemic, the MCA Youth Civil Society Movement Coordination Bureau urges him to accept the overture by the Perikatan Nasional government and nominate himself to be a panelist in the Independent Special Committee on the Emergency. On that platform, he would be able to assist our nation in contributing remedies to lower the number of positive cases to a reasonable level. It is unfortunate that during this outbreak, the DAP stalwart continues to engage in politicking. Given the political instability, will Kit Siang be able to bear the huge cost unto the nation reaped by his disregard of public health and people's sentiments?

In issuing the Proclamation of Emergency which is scheduled to last until 1 August 2021, the declaration by His Majesty, Yang Di-Pertuan Agong on 12 January 2021, was made in line with the Federal Constitution and intended to enable the federal government to fully focus on containing the Covid-19 pandemic.

The existing political uncertainties also factored towards the surge in Covid-19 confirmed positive cases. Our Bureau is disappointed that some Members of Parliament are pushing for the State of Emergency be lifted, or calling for the Dewan Rakyat to convene during the State of Emergency. In particular, DAP MP for Iskandar Puteri Lim Kit Siang brazenly mooted that Parliament should convene as scheduled.

When the coronavirus outbreak first made its presence felt, Kit Siang kept asking the government to convene the Dewan Rakyat. However, the live broadcasts during the Dewan Rakyat sessions reveal that it was difficult to spot Kit Siang anywhere in the august chambers during debates. Adding on to this contradiction, the DAP supremo now demands that Parliament meets on the grounds that government response to this contagion has been unsatisfactory. This charade master is unfit to call for sittings of Parliament.

News all over have reported on the number of Cabinet Ministers and Deputy Ministers who have unfortunately tested positive for Covid-19. As public figures, politicians may come into contact with many people everyday rendering them susceptible to this deadly infectious disease.  In such a high-risk scenario, it is hoped that observing the SOPs under the Movement Control Order 2.0 can reduce any probability of contracting the virus.

Our Bureau implores on the opposition to respect the decision of His Majesty which were made in line with the Federal Constitution. The most important thing which the public desires is to flatten the curve of the Covid-19 spread and for the economy to be revitalised so that as early as possible, people may return life as usual as it once was.
