Adherence to MCO by Pakatan MBSA Councillor would’ve sent message on seriousness of fighting Covid-19 together

The police must thoroughly probe a Pakatan Harapan (PH) Shah Alam City Councillor (MBSA) who was arrested for defying the Movement Control Order (MCO) when he allegedly abused his authority by ordering a multipurpose hall in Shah Alam to be opened for him and his friends to play badminton. Action should thus be taken against him based on the law, party ethics and MBSA’s Code of Conduct to serve as an effective deterrent to others, especially political appointees to obey the law and fulfil the trust placed on them.

As a politically appointed City Councillor, the arrested person should be more familiar with the laws and local council regulations and guidelines. He should adhere to the law to serve as a role model to society.

A photograph in a Chinese daily showing the City Councillor purportedly attired in sports wear will disprove any other excuses he offers on the purpose he was there at 1am.

The lack of response from the PH party which appointed him is disappointing. Therefore, it becomes incumbent on MBSA and the PH Selangor state government to take action against that City Councillor to demonstrate they are just and fair without compromise on allies. More crucial, they need to emphasise the serious repercussions on society when the MCO is violated.  Failure to act thus will render MBSA and the Selangor PH government as practising favouritism and the lofty goals of an administration will not be achieved.

Malaysia adheres to the rule of law. PH should not tolerate any of its political appointees abusing their power and committing offences.

The behaviour of the PH City Councillor has exceeded the conduct expected from City Councillors, and the state government should immediately revoke his appointment. Failing to exercise disciplinary action indicates masking the severity of defying the MCO. These shortcomings will only deepen the truth that PH is unable to rectify corrective measures internally.
