Dr M denies responsibility for Anwar’s imprisonment: Are DAP & PKR apologising to Dr Mahathir?

DAP and PKR are strange bedfellows with PPBM Chairman cum Malaysia’s longest serving Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad, who now denies responsibility for Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s incarceration. So should DAP and PKR now apologise to Dr Mahathir for ‘wrongly defaming’ him?

Since Dr Mahathir denies having sent Anwar to prison, then it should be said that the “Reformasi” movement of 1998 did not exist and the establishment of PKR is nothing but a joke.

Looking back at history of Dr Mahathir’s era in the 1990s, overnight, Anwar was ousted from his Deputy Prime Minister’s post. Immediately, Anwar’s supporters launched the Reformasi movement, ie movement for political reform. This was followed by Anwar being arrested on sodomy charges which led to the formation of PKR to contest in the 1999 general elections where it secured 5 parliamentary seats.

On April 14, 1999, Anwar was sentenced to six years' jail on four counts of corruption relating to abuse of power by interfering in police investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct; and on 8 August 2000, nine years in prison for sodomy.

In those years, the same opposition parties strongly condemned Dr Mahathir as cruel, interfering with the judiciary and causing a miscarriage of justice. Now it is apparent that DAP and PKR were just trying to gain political capital.

When Dr Mahathir to attend yesterday's PKR Annual Congress, he had the audacity to publicly declare that “it was not me who put Anwar in jail, but Najib.” For this latest piece of news, DAP and PKR should issue a statement and ask themselves if they want to apologise to their latest BFF Dr Mahathir? On the contrary, dare DAP and PKR refute Dr Mahathir’s declaration that he “did not put Anwar in jail” ? We are waiting for a clarification by the Opposition.
