RAUB: While Malaysia has a Jalan Qinzhou in Pahang, China now has a Lebuh Kuantan as part of a twinning programme between the two countries over their two industrial parks.

The Jalan Qinzhou road sign is at the Malaysia-China Kuantan Industrial Park (MCKIP) while Lebuh Kuantan was launched at the China-Malaysia Qinzhou Industrial Park (CMQIP) in Nanning yesterday.

Transport Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said Pakatan Harapan chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was championing racial extremism when he claimed that having a Jalan Qinzhou was equivalent to Malaysia selling off to China.

Liow, who is MCA president and Bentong MP, was speaking to reporters after launching the Discover Raub carnival at the Guan Yin Temple in Jalan Tras here.

The event, organised by MCA vice-president Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun, is aimed at promoting Raub’s hidden treasures and developing Raub through tourism.

“Dr Mahathir said Malaysia was selling its sovereignty to China by naming one of the roads in the MCKIP ‘Jalan Qinzhou’, with the road sign in Chinese.

“But he neglected one important point – these parks are government-to-government ‘two countries, twin parks’.

Commenting on speculation that DAP vice-chairman Teresa Kok would be standing in Raub, Liow said the most important thing is to understand the needs of the voters.

“Chew is hardworking and has a good track record. People have confidence in her,” he said.

Also at the event yesterday was the Chinese Embassy’s minister counsellor Chen Chen.
