Contrasting attitudes towards China: Typical volte-face by DAP!

We welcome DAP’s acceptance of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (OBOR) as this shows that MCA’s efforts in pushing for local entrepreneurs to grasp the business opportunities arising from OBOR, and in enhancing the bilateral ties between China and Malaysia, are correct and far-sighted that even DAP cannot deny.

DAP had been critical about MCA’s efforts in pushing for OBOR but the party itself had taken a completely different stance after its high-profile meeting with Chinese Ambassador to Malaysia, HE Dr Huang Huikang. This huge U-turn is akin to a powerful slap on DAP’s own face apart from once again magnifying its typical double-standard approach.

DAP’s volte-face clearly shows that it is actually a hypocritical and opportunistic party which will not hesitate to change its colour to suit the environment it is in. When the party is trying to please the Malay populists, it echoes the anti-China statements by the Parti Bersatu Bumiputera Malaysia (PBBM). But when it wants to capitalise on the cordial Malaysia-China relations, its top leaders paid a courtesy call unto the Chinese Ambassador in high fashion and even released statements as if it appreciates the relationship between the two countries and welcomes investment from China, just to please the Chinese community here.

While we welcome DAP’s positive remarks on Malaysia-China relations, Chinese investment, OBOR and so on, DAP needs to clarify if it is admitting that its and its allies’ criticism on MCA in the following two issues were unfounded and only slander:

First,  when PBBM leaders like Tun Mahathir and Tan Sri Muhyiddin’ were making anti-China assertions that Chinese nationals had taken away the rice bowl from the locals, the government was compromising national sovereignty, 700 thousand Chinese would be made Malaysian citizens and so on, DAP made no effort to refute and was only keeping mum. Some of its leaders even attempted to ride on the issue and provoke the negative sentiment especially among certain Malay populist groups.

Second, DAP Political Education Bureau head Liew Chin Tong had labelled MCA as China’s agent for pushing for OBOR, but the party made a big about-turn after DAP visited the Chinese Ambassador. Does DAP in general, and Liew in particular, now agree with MCA’s efforts in promoting OBOR, and admit their criticisms on MCA previously were baseless?

MCA as a ruling party is duty bound to help more local Chinese entrepreneurs, guilds and associations to grasp the business opportunities arising from OBOR through good Malaysia-China relationship, to further engineer national economic development that benefits all people, at all times. DAP had made a mockery of itself in condemning MCA and then making a giant pendulum swing.
