CAMERON HIGHLANDS: With a new Malaysia, comes a new definition for the word "volunteer", says MCA president Datuk Seri Dr Wee Ka Siong.

He said he found it amusing that Pakatan Harapan managed to find new definition for the word.

"When we say volunteer, what does it mean?

"According to various dictionaries, it is someone who give services without wanting anything in return.

Dr Wee was asked to comment on viral pictures of a woman wearing a Pakatan shirt giving out money during one of its programmes.

Pakatan's Jelai operation centre assistant chief Arvind Bharet had said that the money was to reimburse volunteers for petrol costs after they had come out to support its by-election candidate M. Manogaran during nomination day on Saturday.

Dr Wee also said he found it odd when Election Commission (EC) chairman Azhar Azizan Harun said they do not have power to investigate the incident.

"I believe the EC has teams to monitor all campaigning activities. So if they know something happened, why can't they take action?

"If they can cut out someone's head from posters because it was wrongly shown, why can't they advise on the incident? Something is really wrong," he said.

He also said that the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and the police should investigate the incident.

"MIC Youth has lodged a police report. Was there any action taken?

"Where's the person who handed out the money? She should have been investigated," he said.

Dr Wee also questioned why the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) wanted to investigate who had spread the photograph.

"Shouldn't the authorities be investigating the person who gave out the money? It's like arresting the whistleblower," he said.
