Following the submission of 10 full, unedited video clips to the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) by former Chief Commissioner Latheefa Koya on 11 March 2024, there is no justification for the MACC to delay or refuse to investigate the collective corruption case involving Sabah State Assemblypersons (ADUNs).

The collective involvement of Sabah ADUNs in corruption is a grave matter. As the highest legislative body in the state, numerous ADUNs have been accused of engaging in corruption, covering for each other for mutual gain. This deprives the public of their rights.

If this case is not thoroughly investigated, the public will view the state assembly as a den of thieves, whereby trust in the system will erode. If the MACC, having received the full, unedited videos, still fails to act, it will deepen negative public perceptions and expose the hypocrisy of the unity government, which claims to fight corruption but does not follow through.

Previously, the MACC had taken a passive stance, citing edited, incomplete videos and the whistleblower’s identity as reasons for inaction. Reports indicate a businessman named Albert offered to provide evidence as a whistleblower but was rejected. The Prime Minister even stated that whistleblowers involved in corruption would not be protected.

Now that the full, unedited videos have been released, and Albert has not received whistleblower protection or confirmation, if the MACC continues with inaction, it raises the question of whether it practices selective enforcement. With the Sabah state elections approaching, could the MACC’s inaction be a political bargaining tool?

MCA Youth urges a thorough investigation, ensuring justice for the innocent and accountability for the guilty. Corruption in the political arena must be eradicated, as all are equal before the law.

Those in power must exercise authority responsibly, not abuse it for personal gain. With multiple Sabah ADUNs allegedly involved collectively in corruption, will those in power protect each other, allowing wrongdoers to escape justice? This is a serious matter.

Unity government officials frequently shout anti-corruption slogans, with the Prime Minister even spending taxpayers’ money to promote integrity. Rather than empty rhetoric, they must take real action by punishing all those involved in graft, regardless of political affiliation. Otherwise, selective enforcement and failure to act will only undermine public trust, turning the MACC into a tool for political agendas.
