The closure of the 24-hour emergency service at Klinik Kesihatan in Tanjong Malim has had devastating consequences for the local community. With the nearest emergency unit now 22 kilometres away, residents face lengthy delays for ambulance services or must travel considerable distances for treatment. Tragically, fatalities in the area have risen, with three recent deaths that could have been prevented if the clinic had remained open.

The decision to close the 24-hour service aimed to standardise operations with those of other rural health facilities. However, after serving the community faithfully for 20 years, this abrupt change raises serious concerns about its appropriateness. Providing round-the-clock care in a rural area with limited access to medical services was not a mistake but a necessity. This decision overlooks the unique needs of Tanjong Malim’s residents, who, like everyone else, depend on and deserve immediate healthcare access.

At the very least, residents should have been offered a closer alternative or provided with more time to adapt to such a significant change. Rural communities have the right to equitable access to healthcare, and the lack of provision in this instance is simply unacceptable. The government must recognise the urgency of this situation and take immediate action to address the pressing needs of the residents of Tanjong Malim. The health and safety of the community should be a priority, and comprehensive efforts must be made to restore essential services that could save lives.
